Navi Mumbai International Airport: Phase 2 Takes Flight This October!

Pre-development work for Phase 2 of Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to begin in October, marking the next step in expanding the facility. This phase includes a second terminal and an additional runway, according to BVJK Sharma, CEO of the airport project.

The first phase—featuring one terminal and a single runway with capacity for 20 million passengers annually—is expected to be operational by the end of August, although a formal launch date is yet to be announced.

Airlines such as IndiGo and Akasa Air have confirmed operational plans, while discussions with Air India are ongoing. Initially, the airport will handle 8–10 air traffic movements (ATMs) per hour, ramping up to 30 by April 2026, even though the runway is built to handle 45 ATMs per hour.

Due to limited terminal capacity, the Adani Group is expediting Phase 2, which will increase the airport’s capacity to 50–55 million passengers annually by 2029. Preparatory activities like excavation and soil testing will commence in October. A design competition will select the architect for the new terminal, and modular construction methods will be employed to minimize disruption to airport operations.

Passenger experience upgrades include the integration of Digital Yatra and the Adani One app, with discussions underway with the Civil Aviation Ministry to introduce body scanners and CT x-ray machines.
