On 30 June 2025, the Government of Bihar and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the development of six regional airports across the state under the Central Government’s UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme.
The signing ceremony, held at Bihar Niwas in New Delhi, was attended by senior officials including Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena, Resident Commissioner Kundan Kumar, and Special Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat and Director of Civil Aviation Nilesh Ramchandra Deore.
The proposed airports will be developed at Madhubani, Birpur (Supaul), Munger, Valmikinagar (West Champaran), Muzaffarpur, and Saharsa, and will include civil enclaves and supporting infrastructure to enhance regional air connectivity. This initiative aligns with the Centre’s broader vision to develop 50 new airports within five years, and scale the national total to over 350 airports by 2047.
The plan has already received approval from the Bihar Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. An initial allocation of Rs 150 crore has been sanctioned, with Rs 25 crore earmarked for each location in the first phase of development.
