Sky’s the Limit: Vijayawada’s New Terminal Enters Final Countdown

The new terminal building at Vijayawada Airport is nearing completion, with around 80% of the work finished. Authorities have set a revised timeline of five months to complete the remaining construction after earlier delays. Airport Director Lakshmi Kantha Reddy attributed the setbacks to insufficient support from the contractor but assured that steps are being taken to address pending issues and expedite the project. Once completed, the terminal is expected to provide enhanced facilities and significantly improve the passenger experience.

In the broader aviation context, the Union Cabinet has approved a revamped Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), known as UDAN, aimed at making air travel more accessible, affordable, and inclusive across India. The initiative includes plans to develop 100 airports and 200 heliports in hilly regions, Union Territories, the Northeast, and aspirational districts. The Vijayawada terminal project aligns with these national efforts to expand air connectivity.

Additionally, under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, support is being extended for aircraft acquisition to strengthen the domestic aviation manufacturing ecosystem. The development of airports, heliports, and water aerodromes is expected to boost regional connectivity, unlock opportunities in remote areas, and promote balanced, sustainable growth in India’s aviation sector.
