Scania Reboots India Strategy, Targeting Mining & Construction

Swedish truck maker Scania is restructuring its India operations under new leadership, with an initial focus on the mining and heavy construction sectors. On-road haulage will follow within three to four years.

Led by industry veteran Silvio Munhoz, Scania is treating India like a startup backed by the Volkswagen Group. The company is pushing “solution sales” — combining vehicles with financing, driver training, uptime guarantees, and resale support.

Scania recently launched its globally homologated Super Series in India, featuring engines and chassis compatible with 100% biodiesel, CNG, LNG, biogas, and future electrification, alongside improved fuel efficiency.

Its Narasapura plant near Bengaluru, with a 2,000-unit capacity, is currently underutilized and operates with less than 30% localisation. Scania aims to boost both by 2026, drawing from its experience in China. Further localisation and potential investments will depend on volume growth.

The company is aiming to replicate its global market share in mining, heavy cargo, and tractor-trailers, positioning itself as a competitive leader in India’s off-road and construction haulage segments.
