In a major push to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce transport-related emissions, the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) will set up 500 EV charging stations across the state.
To support this initiative, TNGECL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) for technical assistance. As part of the collaboration, officials from TNGECL and ITDP visited Delhi to study its EV infrastructure, which currently includes 2,500 electric buses and a target of 13,000 by 2030. Delhi’s model also features battery swapping facilities for two- and three-wheelers.
TNGECL Managing Director Dr. Aneesh Sekhar announced that 19 stations—including 10 with battery swapping capabilities—will be installed in Chennai. Additionally, 20 stations will be developed along the Chennai-Coimbatore and Chennai-Kanniyakumari corridors in the first phase. Plans are underway to create full-fledged EV hubs with amenities such as waiting lounges, restaurants, and restrooms.
With around 1,300 charging stations already in place, Tamil Nadu is rapidly expanding its EV infrastructure. A digital map and online platform will soon be launched to assist EV users and connect landowners with prospective charging station operators.
