Adani Enterprises Ltd (AEL) has launched India’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered truck in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transition to sustainable cargo transportation. Developed in collaboration with leading Indian and global energy technology firms and a major automotive manufacturer, the truck is capable of transporting up to 40 tonnes of cargo across a range of 200 km, powered by three onboard hydrogen tanks.
The truck was flagged off by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who highlighted the state’s commitment to sustainable development: “The launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered truck in Chhattisgarh reflects our focus on environmental stewardship. Initiatives like these will greatly reduce our carbon footprint and set new benchmarks for the industry.”
This initiative aligns with Adani’s broader decarbonisation strategy and is led by Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Ltd (ANIL). The truck will be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III Block to a state-run thermal power plant, where Adani operates as the mine developer through a competitive process overseen by the Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company. The hydrogen fuel cells are sourced internally through ANIL, which also manages production of green hydrogen, solar modules, wind turbines, and battery systems.
In a parallel development, GreenLine Mobility Solutions, a part of the Essar Group, has expanded its fleet of LNG-powered trucks with financing support from Shriram Finance. The new fleet was inaugurated in Chakan, Pune. GreenLine currently operates over 650 trucks, which have collectively logged 40 million kilometres and avoided more than 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The company aims to scale up to 10,000 LNG and EV trucks across India, backed by a network of 100 fuelling and charging stations.
