Hindalco Industries is set to establish a cutting-edge battery foil manufacturing facility in Sambalpur, Odisha, with a substantial investment of Rs 800 crore, aligning with the growing electric vehicle (EV) market. The strategically located facility will be complemented by a 25 MW solar power plant, maximizing its access to solar energy through a 400 kV national grid connection.
Scheduled for commissioning by July 2025, the facility will initially yield 25,000 tonnes of aluminium foil, serving as a pivotal component in the production of lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells.
This expansion in Odisha not only fortifies Hindalco's capacity to supply materials to gigafactories worldwide but also underscores its commitment to the government's eco-friendly initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable growth. The investment in this state-of-the-art battery foil mill reflects Hindalco's stride towards building a self-reliant India (Atma Nirbhar Bharat).
In addition to enhancing the manufacturing capacity of high-quality aluminium foil used in rechargeable batteries, Hindalco is actively engaged with original equipment manufacturers (OEM) to collaboratively develop critical components such as battery enclosures, motor housings, and lightweight load bodies. Many of these components are pioneering designs, marking a significant milestone in India's technological landscape.
Hindalco's strategic investments in battery materials and technologies respond to the escalating demand in both the EV and grid storage sectors. The company has already achieved a technological breakthrough in manufacturing fine-quality battery foils at its Mouda unit, presently undergoing qualification with lithium-ion cell manufacturers in India, Europe, and the United States. This forward-looking approach positions Hindalco at the forefront of innovation and sustainability in the rapidly evolving energy storage industry.
