L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore, a business vertical of Larsen & Toubro, has secured a large contract from Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd (BCGCL), a joint venture of Coal India and Bharat Heavy Electricals.
The project involves setting up a nitric acid and ammonium nitrate plant on a lump sum turnkey (LSTK Package-4) basis, with single-point responsibility. Designed to convert coal into ammonium nitrate, the facility will have a planned production capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day, catering to the needs of India’s mining, infrastructure, and industrial sectors.
The scope of work covers process licensing, basic and detailed engineering, procurement, construction, mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and performance guarantee testing. It also includes sustained load operations, overall project management, and final handover of the plant and associated facilities.
Once operational, the plant is expected to boost domestic production of ammonium nitrate—a key input for mining and construction—while supporting India’s push for coal gasification-based value addition and greater self-reliance in critical industrial chemicals.
