Green Gold Rush: AM Green Taps Bamboo for Biofuel Revolution

AM Green, a green energy firm backed by the founders of the Greenko Group, is set to expand its bamboo-based ethanol production following the successful launch of its ₹4,500 crore biorefinery in Golaghat, Assam.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the facility is India’s first commercial-scale, bamboo-based second-generation (2G) biorefinery. It has already begun supplying fuel-grade ethanol for blending at the Numaligarh Refinery. The plant leverages Organosolv technology, which is both environmentally friendly and delivers higher ethanol yields per tonne of biomass.

Operated by Assam Bio Ethanol Pvt Ltd (ABEPL) — a joint venture with Numaligarh Refinery — the facility can process 300,000 TPA of feedstock to produce 50,000 TPA of ethanol, 20,000 TPA of furfural, and 8,000 TPA of acetic acid.

AM Green plans to scale the technology globally and establish new biorefineries in Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and overseas. Future enhancements may include lignin valorisation to reduce ethanol production costs and generate high-value products such as resins, marine fuels, and bio-bitumen.
