EKI to Facilitate Carbon Market Access for Varanasi's Biogas Project

EKI Energy Services (EKI) has been appointed as the carbon consultant for the Varanasi Smart City Bio-Conversion Project, a key initiative aimed at reducing methane emissions and promoting sustainable urban development.

Located in Shahanshahpur, Varanasi, the project utilizes advanced anaerobic digestion technology to process around 70 tonnes of animal manure and organic waste daily. This is converted into compressed biogas (CBG) and organic fertilizers, with the project already achieving a reduction of 2,806 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions during its initial monitoring period.

Part of the Government of India’s SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative, the project is a joint effort between the Adani Group, Gobardhan Varanasi Foundation SPV, and local authorities. EKI will facilitate carbon market access to help enhance the project's financial sustainability and environmental impact.

With a 25-year operational horizon, the project is expected to mitigate 33,187 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions over a seven-year crediting period. It will also generate 2,500–2,800 kg of CBG daily, while its by-products—fermented organic manure (FOM) and liquid organic manure (LFOM)—will support eco-friendly agriculture in the region.
