Mizoram Greenlights First Private Coal Exploration in Lunglei

For the first time, private sector-led coal exploration has commenced in Mizoram, with Maheswari Mining launching operations in Rotlang West, Lunglei district, in March 2025.

The development was disclosed by geologist C. Malsawmkima during the Geological Society of Mizoram’s general body meeting in Aizawl. Preliminary surveys have identified three coal-bearing sites, with seam thicknesses of 7 cm, 12 cm, and 8 cm, along with indications of additional potential reserves. A borehole sample has been sent to the National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur, for analysis of coal quality and the presence of rare earth elements (REEs).

The meeting, attended by Commerce & Industries Minister F. Rodingliana, also discussed ongoing hydrocarbon and REE exploration, institutional partnerships, and the need for enhanced Central funding.

Between 2005 and 2025, Mizoram generated ₹101.68 crore in mineral revenue, including ₹63.05 crore from minor minerals and ₹38.62 crore from petroleum exploration licences, underscoring the state’s growing mineral economy.
