Nearly 99,000 households in Tamil Nadu have been connected to piped natural gas (PNG), according to a recent statement in Parliament by Suresh Gopi, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas.
In response to questions raised by DMK MPs C.N. Annadurai and G. Selvam, the minister noted that 45% of the planned 37,374 km national gas pipeline network has been completed. This infrastructure is part of the Minimum Work Programme (MWP) set by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), which aims to provide 2.32 crore PNG connections across India by 2032.
Tamil Nadu has been divided into 18 geographical areas (GAs) for the rollout of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network. Authorised entities executing the pipeline projects include BPCL, IOCL, Megha City Gas, IRM Energy, Adani Total Gas, Torrent Gas, and Think Gas (formerly AG&P). These companies were granted authorisations between 2018 and 2022.
As of May, Coimbatore leads in PNG coverage with 38,362 connections, followed by Nilgiris (18,882) and Salem (4,593). Major pipeline completions include 3,063 km in Coimbatore, 2,433 km in Chennai-Tiruvallur, and 2,011 km in Kancheepuram.
The PNGRB continues to monitor implementation progress to ensure timely rollout and adherence to MWP targets.
