The Future is Ammonia: A ₹13,000-Crore Milestone in AP

The foundation stone for India’s first mega green ammonia plant was laid in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, on January 17, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan inaugurated the ₹13,000-crore project being developed by AM Green, a Greenko Group company. Spread across 495 acres, the facility will have an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes and will manufacture fully carbon-free green ammonia, in contrast to conventional fossil fuel-based ammonia. The project involves the brownfield conversion of an existing grey ammonia plant operated by Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals.

Strategically located near Kakinada Port, the plant is primarily geared towards export markets, with supply agreements already in place with global partners. Powered entirely by renewable energy, the project aligns with India’s net-zero targets and global decarbonisation efforts. Terming it a landmark initiative, CM Naidu said Andhra Pradesh was emerging as a “Kakinada Green Hydrogen Valley” of global significance. Commercial production is expected to begin from 2027.
