In a major push to resolve Mumbai’s long-standing slum redevelopment crisis, the Maharashtra government has decided to revive 86 stalled Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects by terminating non-performing developers and appointing new ones.
This decision is set to benefit lakhs of slum-dwellers, including nearly 50,000 families who were relocated to temporary housing but stopped receiving rent from defaulting developers. The issue drew renewed attention during the state’s budget session, following a Bombay High Court reprimand in June 2024 over a decade-long delay in an SRA project in Wadala.
To tackle these delays, a review meeting was convened on June 16, 2025, by Mumbai Suburbs Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar. Officials confirmed that legal notices have been issued to errant developers, and their development rights will be revoked. This will clear the path for appointing new developers to restart work. “This move will empower residents in Mumbai’s suburbs by facilitating the resumption of long-pending SRA projects,” said Shelar.
