Assam Launches New Inland Waterways Terminal.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated a new Inland Waterways Terminal (IWT) in Jogighopa, Assam, on February 18, 2025. The terminal, built at a cost of Rs 82.03 crore, is designed to improve logistics and connectivity in Eastern India while fostering trilateral trade with Bhutan and Bangladesh. The Minister also flagged off two ships and two barges to Bangladesh.

With an initial handling capacity of 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the terminal will process commodities such as coal, stone chips, food grains, and crude oil. Located on the IBP route, it facilitates trade between Bangladesh, the Barak Valley, and other regions of India through Kolkata/Haldia. Additionally, a proposed railway link will connect the terminal to the multi-modal logistics park (MMLP). Strategically positioned 108 km from the Bangladesh border and 91 km from Gelephu, Bhutan, this terminal is also a designated Port of Call under the India-Bangladesh PIWTT agreement.
