Welspun New Energy has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to develop a 200 MW solar power project integrated with a 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The project marks Welspun’s entry into storage-integrated renewable energy and reflects India’s growing shift toward firm and dispatchable clean power solutions. By combining solar generation with battery storage, the hybrid system is designed to address intermittency challenges, enabling power supply beyond daylight hours and improving overall grid reliability.
The initiative aligns with SECI’s evolving procurement strategy, which increasingly emphasises hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) power solutions to meet rising demand and ensure stable supply. The project’s tariff has been discovered at approximately ₹2.86 per kWh, underscoring the improving cost competitiveness of solar-plus-storage technologies as battery costs decline and market maturity increases.
Once operational, the project is expected to enhance grid stability, support peak demand management, and accelerate India’s transition toward dispatchable renewable energy systems that better align supply with demand.
