L&T to Build 185 MW Solar Plant with Battery Storage in Bihar

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced a significant contract to establish a grid-connected 185 MW solar PV plant combined with a 254 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Kajra, Bihar. This project, costing between ₹2,500 and ₹5,000 crore, was secured by L&T's Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division.

The state-of-the-art 254 MWh BESS will enable efficient storage of solar energy during periods of low demand and discharge it during peak times. Additionally, the system will stabilize generation fluctuations, regulate frequency, and support voltage, featuring a black start capability for quick re-energization after outages.

A. Ravindran, Senior Vice President & Head of Renewable Strategic Business Group at PT&D, highlighted this project's addition to L&T's renewable portfolio, which now includes 18 GWp of solar and wind generation projects. He noted that their extensive experience with over 1.5 GWh of battery storage capacity has positioned them as a preferred EPC partner globally.

Research Analyst Amit Anwani from Prabhudas Lilladher emphasized that this major order boosts L&T’s PT&D year-to-date order intake to ₹5,500-12,500 crore. This significant acquisition further strengthens L&T's leadership in the renewable energy sector.

T. Madhava Das, L&T Whole-time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities), reiterated the company’s expertise in renewable energy solutions across various technologies and geographies, including India, the Middle East, and the Far East. He emphasized their commitment to delivering economical, safe, and timely projects on a GW scale.
