On 30 July 2025, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated a ₹340-crore PepsiCo bottling plant in Mendipathar, North Garo Hills — the largest such facility in the Northeast.
Spread across 37 acres in the Mendipathar Industrial Area, the plant is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment and drive the growth of ancillary industries. Recalling the area's long-delayed development, the Chief Minister noted that the industrial zone was envisioned in the 1990s but remained without investment for over 30 years. He paid tribute to his late father, P. A. Sangma, former Lok Sabha Speaker, crediting him with the original vision for the project.
Strategically located as Meghalaya’s only town with a railway head, Mendipathar is well-positioned for future industrial expansion.
CM Sangma also announced that another beverage manufacturing plant in the Tikrikilla–Bajengdoba region is nearing completion, further underlining the state’s growing industrial momentum and economic potential.
