BEML Delivers India's Biggest Electric Shovel to Coal India

BEML has reached a major milestone in India’s mining and manufacturing sector by officially handing over the country’s largest indigenously developed electric rope shovel—designated BRS21—to Coal India. The equipment was ceremonially presented to B. Sairam, Chairman and Managing Director of Northern Coalfields.

Engineered specifically for overburden removal in open cast mining, the BRS21 is a high-capacity electric rope shovel with an operating weight of 720 tonnes and a 21-cubic-metre bottom dump bucket. These specifications place it among the most capable machines of its kind globally. The shovel is designed to meet the demanding requirements of large-scale mining operations, particularly in coal-rich regions under Coal India’s purview.

BEML emphasized the swift development timeline of the BRS21, which was completed in just 24 months. This accomplishment is being celebrated as a testament to India’s growing engineering prowess and a significant step toward technological self-reliance in key industrial sectors.
