PM Modi Boosts "Make in India" with ₹21,405 Cr Dahod Rail Factory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Dahod Locomotive Manufacturing Workshop today during a two-day visit to Gujarat, marking a significant achievement under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Built by the Ministry of Railways at a cost of ₹21,405 crore, the state-of-the-art facility is expected to generate approximately 10,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly. Designed to produce 120 high-powered locomotives annually—with a scalable capacity of up to 150—the plant will manufacture engines capable of hauling 4,600 tonnes, boosting India’s freight movement and reducing dependence on imports.

Remarkably, the facility was completed in just three years since its foundation was laid in 2022, showcasing rapid infrastructure development.

Over the next decade, the factory aims to roll out 1,200 locomotives, strengthening India’s manufacturing ecosystem and advancing self-reliance goals. As part of the event, PM Modi will also unveil additional railway infrastructure projects worth ₹2,287 crore, bringing the total sector investment to ₹23,692 crore. These projects include line doubling, electrification, and gauge conversion initiatives.

A major highlight of the inauguration will be the dedication of India’s first domestically manufactured 9,000 HP electric locomotive—marking a significant leap forward in freight transportation modernisation.
