The Durgapur Steel Plant in West Bengal is poised for a major expansion with the proposed establishment of a second production unit, nearly 67 years after the commissioning of its original facility.
The project, estimated to involve an investment of Rs 35,000 crore, is expected to significantly boost steel production capacity while strengthening Durgapur’s position as one of India’s key industrial and manufacturing centres. The expansion represents a major milestone for the Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and aligns with the country's long-term strategy to enhance domestic steel output in response to rising infrastructure and industrial demand.
Originally established with technical assistance from the United Kingdom, the Durgapur Steel Plant commenced operations in 1959 as one of India’s earliest integrated steel plants. Over the years, it has developed into a leading producer of long steel products and remains the nation’s sole manufacturer of forged railway wheels and axles, serving critical transportation and infrastructure sectors.
The proposed new unit is expected to incorporate advanced manufacturing technologies and modern production systems, improving operational efficiency, productivity, and product quality. Beyond increasing output, the expansion is anticipated to support the growth of downstream industries, generate economic opportunities, and reinforce India's self-reliance in strategically important steel production segments.
The development underscores the broader momentum within India's steel sector as the country continues to invest in capacity expansion and industrial modernisation to meet future growth requirements.
