Rio Tinto has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India-based AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M) to explore the development of a large-scale, low-carbon aluminium project in India.
The proposed project envisions the production of up to one million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of primary aluminium and two MTPA of alumina, powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, supported by pumped hydro storage. In its first phase, the project will focus on assessing the feasibility of establishing a 500,000-tonne-per-year primary aluminium smelter at a strategically chosen site in India.
Under the MoU, AMG M&M will work with Greenko to evaluate a firmed renewable energy solution, while Rio Tinto will lead efforts to identify a commercially viable alumina supply pathway. Both companies are currently conducting technical and commercial assessments to evaluate the project's overall feasibility and impact.
If successful, the project would represent a significant step toward decarbonising industrial production globally and support India’s goals for clean energy and sustainable economic growth.
