JSW Steel and Japan-based JFE Steel Corporation have joined forces in a 50:50 joint venture to produce grain-oriented electrical steel in India. Renamed as JSW JFE Electrical Steel, the new venture will be headquartered in the Bellary district of Karnataka, with an intended investment of Rs 5,500 crore. The groundbreaking ceremony, symbolizing the commencement of this significant collaboration, took place on February 12, 2024.
The manufacturing facility aims to kickstart production during the fiscal year 2027, with plans for subsequent capacity expansions to meet the escalating demand for grain-oriented electrical steel in the nation. This strategic move is poised to address the burgeoning domestic need for such steel, thereby making a substantial contribution to India's energy infrastructure.
Grain-oriented electrical steel serves as a critical component in the fabrication of energy-efficient transformers, be it in laminated, wound, or punched sheet configurations. It acts as the fundamental core material for various types of transformers, including distribution transformers, power transformers, and smaller units.
