SAIL's Steel Surge: ₹30,000 Crore Rourkela Expansion to 9.4 MTPA

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) plans to expand the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to 9.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030, investing ₹30,000 crore to strengthen steel supplies for defence, oil & gas, and automotive sectors.

The expansion, covering 1,200 acres on the plant's southeastern side, will contribute 25% to SAIL’s 2030 production target of 35 MTPA. Currently, RSP operates at 4.4 MTPA within SAIL’s total 20.3 MTPA capacity. The project includes key infrastructure such as a raw material handling plant, coke oven stamp charge battery, sinter plant, thin slab caster-direct rolling, cold rolling mill, silicon mill, and logistics enhancements. A new blast furnace and steel melting shop will also be added.

To improve transportation, a new railway line from Dumertra station to RSP is under construction, easing congestion at Bondamunda Yard. South Eastern Railways is building this connection under a cost deposit scheme funded by RSP.

SAIL operates five integrated steel plants: RSP (Odisha), Durgapur and Burnpur (West Bengal), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), and Bokaro (Jharkhand).
