Union Minister Anupriya Patel informed the Rajya Sabha that major infrastructure work has commenced for India’s first bulk drug park being developed in Jambusar, Bharuch district, Gujarat, including a 40-km pipeline to bring water from the Narmada canal.
The pipeline will supply 30 million litres per day (MLD) of water to ensure reliable industrial water availability for pharmaceutical manufacturing units in the region. Estimated at around ₹130 crore, the project is a key component of efforts to strengthen India’s domestic pharmaceutical and active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) ecosystem. It will also reduce dependence on groundwater and improve sustainability.
Most civil works for common infrastructure such as roads, drainage, water supply, and waste management have been awarded and are nearing completion. Work has also begun on a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and a solvent recovery facility, while a four-km connectivity road has already been completed.
The project, which received environmental clearance in February 2024, aims to reduce drug production costs and is expected to be completed by March 2027.
