Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday reviewed the progress of the proposed redevelopment of five major road corridors in Delhi, with construction work expected to commence soon.
During a review meeting with the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) and various road-owning agencies, the Lieutenant Governor stressed that the redevelopment must prioritise dust-free roads and reduction of ambient air pollution, in line with guidelines issued by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).
He also highlighted the need to make these public spaces more accessible and citizen-friendly, encouraging greater public participation and ownership to improve safety, maintenance and overall usability. The redesigned corridors are expected to include open and recreational spaces for residents and commuters.
Officials said the project will feature an advanced stormwater drainage system aimed at preventing waterlogging and ensuring that silt does not accumulate after rainfall. This is expected to improve traffic movement during the monsoon season and help reduce dust pollution caused by dried silt deposits.
The redevelopment plan further includes scientifically designed green central verges with grass cover and piped irrigation systems to minimise soil erosion and reduce reliance on water tankers, which often contribute to traffic congestion.
Additionally, the upgraded corridors will have integrated pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycle tracks, public utilities and resting shelters to enhance accessibility and commuter convenience.
