The long-awaited four-laning of the Trichy–Karaikudi National Highway has been revived, with authorities advancing plans to upgrade the key transport corridor and construct two elevated stretches to improve traffic flow and connectivity.
The project will widen the existing highway to four lanes, increasing road capacity and reducing travel time between Tiruchirappalli and Karaikudi. The upgraded corridor is expected to facilitate more efficient movement of both passenger and commercial vehicles along one of Tamil Nadu’s important transportation routes.
As part of the redevelopment plan, two elevated corridors will be constructed at major congestion points to ensure smoother traffic movement, reduce bottlenecks, and enhance road safety. These elevated sections are expected to ease congestion in urban areas and minimise delays caused by intersections and local traffic.
The project’s revival follows a prolonged period of delay and is expected to significantly strengthen regional connectivity, support trade and economic activity, and improve access across districts located along the highway corridor.
Officials said the enhanced road infrastructure will provide better connectivity to industrial, commercial, and tourism hubs while contributing to the state’s broader efforts to modernise and expand its transportation network.
