Hyderabad Water Board Plans New Osmansagar Pipeline

To address the growing demand for drinking water in Greater Hyderabad, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is planning to construct a new parallel pipeline from Osmansagar, complementing the existing conduit.

A detailed project report (DPR) is currently being prepared for the initiative. At present, water from Osmansagar is conveyed to the Asif Nagar filter beds through an ageing conduit built during the Nizam’s era, which operates on gravity without the use of pumps. Over the years, this old infrastructure has deteriorated, resulting in significant leakages and supply inefficiencies. While Osmansagar has the capacity to supply approximately 25 million gallons per day (MGD), only about half of this volume reaches the city due to transmission losses.

The proposed new pipeline aims to restore full water draw capacity, reduce wastage, and enhance the reliability of Hyderabad’s drinking water infrastructure—ensuring a sustainable and efficient supply to meet the city's growing needs.
