Navi Mumbai's Water Future: CIDCO's Proactive Plan for 2050

In a proactive step to secure Navi Mumbai’s future water needs — projected at 1,257 million litres per day (MLD) by 2050 — the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has launched a series of critical water infrastructure initiatives. These projects are designed to ensure a sustainable and resilient water supply for the region, supporting the city’s rapid urban expansion.

At the core of these efforts is the augmentation of the Hetawane Water Supply Scheme, currently being executed in four phases. Progress is well underway, with 41% of the water treatment plant, 8.5% of the raw water tunnel, and 25.7% of the pure water tunnel already completed. The entire scheme is targeted for completion by June 2029.

To meet long-term demand, CIDCO is also developing new water sources such as the Kondhane Dam on the Ulhas River, initially planned to supply 250 MLD, with scalability up to 350 MLD. Both the Kondhane and Balganga Dam projects are expected to be completed within four to five years, significantly enhancing the region’s water security.

In the short term, the Maharashtra government approved an additional 120 MLD allocation from the Hetawane Dam in August 2020, through a project valued at ₹119.80 crore. This increases CIDCO’s total draw from Hetawane to 270 MLD, helping address immediate needs while long-term infrastructure comes online.
