The Tourism and Minor Irrigation Departments of Karnataka are set to launch non-motorised water sports at seven lakes in Shivamogga district, aiming to boost local tourism while preserving the region’s ecological balance.
The selected lakes include: Balligavi Basavannana Kere, Doopadahalli Doddakere, and Talagunda Hirekere (Shikaripur taluk), Keladi Kere (Sagar taluk),Kubaturu Kere (Sorab taluk), Humcha Mutthina Kere (Hosanagar taluk), Gopishetty Koppa Doddakere (Shivamogga taluk)
Planned activities such as rafting, kayaking, canoeing, and windsurfing will be customised to each lake’s ecological profile, factoring in seasonal water levels and aquatic biodiversity. The initiative reflects a sustainable tourism approach, balancing recreation with environmental stewardship.
Bids for operating these water sports have been received, and final operator selection is currently underway.
In addition to these lakes, 18 reservoirs and 10 beaches—including KRS, Kanva, and Tannirbavi—have also been identified in the current state budget as upcoming water sports hubs.
