The ₹900 Cr Plan to Power Delhi from Trash

The Tehkhand Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant in Southeast Delhi, operated by Jindal Urban Infrastructure, is set for a major expansion aimed at boosting both power generation and biofuel production. Currently processing 2,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day and generating 25 MW of electricity, the plant’s capacity will be enhanced to 45 MW with an additional 20 MW installation.

As part of the expansion, the facility will also begin producing up to 20,000 cubic metres of biogas per day from leachate and green waste slurry. This biogas can be converted into approximately 8 tonnes of Bio-CNG daily, contributing to cleaner fuel alternatives.

The ₹900 crore project has already seen an investment of ₹465 crore, with the remaining ₹435 crore earmarked for the new capacity. Notably, the expansion will be accommodated within the plant's existing footprint, eliminating the need for additional land acquisition.

The facility is integrated with Delhi’s first engineered sanitary landfill at Okhla for ash disposal. By-products such as fly ash and bottom ash are repurposed for use in road construction and brick manufacturing, further promoting circular economy practices.

A draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report has been released and is currently open for public consultation, prior to final clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
