Tiruchi Rushes to the Finish Line on 220 Cr. Panjapur STP

The Tiruchi Corporation is expediting the construction of a modern sewage treatment plant (STP) at Panjapur under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0.

With an estimated cost of ₹220 crore, the new facility is designed to treat 100 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, replacing the city’s outdated plant. It will deploy Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology to ensure efficient treatment and compliance with National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) standards. The upgraded system will also accommodate future sewage demand projected at 140 MLD by 2031.

Construction began in March 2024 and is targeted for completion by February 2026. Officials have been conducting regular site inspections and have directed the contractor to accelerate progress. Despite occupying a smaller footprint than the existing 247.5-acre facility, the new STP will deliver higher efficiency and improved performance. Once operational, the old plant will be dismantled and repurposed.
