Brundamal's Power Play: Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal is Open

A new Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal (GCT) was inaugurated on 8 October 2025 at Brundamal in Jharsuguda district, Odisha, with the aim of enhancing coal transportation efficiency from the Talabira coal blocks and Ib-Sardega region.

Developed on railway-owned land under the East Coast Railway zone, this is the first multimodal terminal in the region constructed entirely on railway land and tracks. Work commenced on 5 July 2023 and was completed by 4 July 2024, with freight operations beginning on 20 September 2025. The terminal has a projected annual handling capacity of 4.38 million tonnes.

The facility is a key component of the PM Gati Shakti initiative, supporting integrated logistics and infrastructure development. It is expected to accelerate coal evacuation, improve freight movement, and contribute significantly to economic growth in the Ib Valley coal belt.

Approximately 80% of the cargo will be coal from Talabira, while the remaining 20% will come from other regional coalfields.
