The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), in collaboration with Dubai-based DP World and Poland’s Nevomo Group BV, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore India’s first autonomous magnetic rail freight movement project.
The initiative will pilot Nevomo’s proprietary MagRail technology for self-propelled, electric-powered rail cargo movement within existing port infrastructure. A 750-metre MagRail test track will be developed at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. The system uses linear motor technology to autonomously transport containerised and bulk cargo, significantly improving speed, capacity, and operational efficiency.
By integrating this next-generation solution, the project aims to reduce logistics costs, cut carbon emissions, and support a greener, more sustainable freight ecosystem.
“This collaboration is a strategic advancement in port infrastructure, enhancing capacity and operational efficiency to support growing cargo demands,” said Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority.
Deendayal Port was chosen for the pilot as DP World is currently developing a ₹4,243.64 crore container terminal at Tuna Tekra, a satellite port facility. The collaboration is expected to set new benchmarks for port-hinterland connectivity, fostering innovation and strengthening India’s global trade competitiveness.
