Delhi's Flyover Fix: 93 Sites Slated for Community Transformation

The Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi, is launching an ambitious initiative to transform vacant land beneath 93 city flyovers into active community spaces. Planned developments include vending zones, shaded waiting areas, public toilets, and recreational facilities like sports pockets.

To kickstart the project, a consultant will soon be appointed to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs) over the next nine months. These DPRs will propose innovative, sustainable, and location-specific design solutions aimed at revitalizing underutilized areas into valuable public assets that enhance Delhi’s urban landscape and improve livability.

Officials highlighted the success of similar redevelopments under the Lajpat Nagar and Moti Nagar flyovers, where landscaped parks have already been created. Major sites earmarked for transformation include the New RTR flyover (2,650 meters), Rani Jhansi (2,000 meters), and AIIMS (1,640 meters).

Each DPR will include architectural concepts, signage strategies, and financial models to ensure long-term maintenance through revenue streams such as kiosks, parking, and advertising. Only firms with a proven track record in large-scale urban development will be eligible to bid for the consultancy contract.
