A New Era for Global Trade: India's Largest Container Terminal Opens

On 04 September 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong virtually inaugurated Phase II of the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT) at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), operated by Singapore’s PSA International.

With an investment of ₹1.3 billion (SGD 1.7 billion), this expansion doubles BMCT’s handling capacity to 4.8 million TEUs, making it India’s largest container terminal and Singapore’s largest foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country to date.

Spanning 200 hectares, the terminal now features a 2,000-metre continuous quay, allowing simultaneous berthing of multiple mega-vessels. It is supported by six DFC-compatible rail tracks connecting to 63 inland container depots, significantly boosting multimodal logistics under the PM Gati Shakti initiative.

The upgraded facility has created over 1,500 skilled jobs, staffed by personnel trained at PSA’s Gateway Terminal. In line with sustainability goals, the terminal uses renewable-powered equipment and includes plans to electrify existing diesel-powered assets.

During the event, both countries also agreed to collaborate on Green and Digital Shipping Corridors to promote cleaner fuel supply chains and streamline port operations. These initiatives mark a major step forward in India–Singapore maritime cooperation, while enhancing India’s role in global trade and logistics.
