A Smart Flow: Chennai’s Adyar Zone Gears Up for 24/7 Water

Chennai Metrowater is moving ahead with its plan to provide круглосуточное (24-hour) piped water supply by finalising a detailed project report (DPR) for the expansion of Phase II in the Adyar zone.

Work is already underway in areas such as Besant Nagar, Taramani, and Thiruvanmiyur, with plans to extend the project to additional parts of Adyar and the Kodambakkam zone. A pilot initiative has also been implemented in Valasaravakkam. The project will follow a hybrid annuity model (HAM), with the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) acting as consultant, and will focus on improving efficiency through smart infrastructure. Key water distribution stations in Velachery, Ekkaduthangal, and Nandanam are set to be upgraded.

A recent stakeholders’ meeting held in Wards 175, 176, and 177 gathered feedback from residents for Phase II. With the integration of IoT-based monitoring, district metered areas, and increased supply from the Chembarambakkam reservoir and Nemmeli desalination plant, water supply in the Adyar zone is expected to rise from 95 MLD to 140 MLD, benefiting around 42,000 households.
