The transformative ‘Alappuzha – A Global Water Wonderland’ project under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme is set to commence with a total outlay of Rs 93.17 crore, of which Rs 74.95 crore will be funded through a Union government loan.
Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Ltd has been appointed as the nodal agency for execution. At a recent preparatory meeting, District Collector Alex Varghese and MLAs PP Chitharanjan and H Salam reviewed plans to position Alappuzha’s iconic beach, backwaters, and canals as a world-class eco-sensitive tourism destination.
Key Components:
Beachfront upgrades: promenade walkways, landscaped seating, event zones, lighting, waste management, parking, and an Indian Coast Guard station.
Canal revitalisation: walkways, public plazas, cafes, boat docks, and jetties—balancing public access with ecological preservation.
Punnamada Finishing Point: to host an international cruise terminal with a marina, adventure zone, experience centre, restaurant, and public amenities.
Collector Varghese confirmed that all necessary approvals will be expedited, with project completion targeted for February 2026.
