Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently announced that investments worth around ₹3 lakh crore have been planned to develop world-class shipbuilding clusters under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
Speaking at the defence and maritime dialogue Sagar Sankalp – Reclaiming India’s Maritime Glory, Singh said strengthening domestic capabilities in shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure is essential to enhance India’s strategic strength and economic growth.
The event was jointly organised by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited and a private media organisation in Kolkata.
Reiterating the importance of self-reliance, Singh said it remains the most effective path for India to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global environment where, according to him, “abnormality has become the new normal.”
He also cautioned that geopolitical tensions could disrupt global energy supplies. Singh noted that disturbances in West Asia following the US–Israel–Iran conflict could impact oil and gas supply chains due to disruptions in global trade routes.
The Defence Minister emphasised that strengthening India’s maritime sector — including shipbuilding capacity and logistics infrastructure — will be critical for ensuring economic resilience and protecting national interests amid growing global uncertainties.
