VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi is planning a ₹5,720-crore harbour expansion and deepening project to enhance its capacity for handling larger container, bulk, and tanker vessels. The project will increase the port's draught from 12.8 metres to 15.2 metres, along with modifications to the harbour entrance, construction of six new berths, and upgrades to existing infrastructure.
Upon completion, the deeper harbour will enable the port to accommodate fully laden Panamax vessels carrying up to 90,000 tonnes of cargo and large container ships with capacities of up to 14,000 TEUs. The expansion is expected to significantly improve cargo-handling capabilities, strengthen operational efficiency, and enhance the port’s position as a key gateway for international maritime trade.
