Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has announced plans to establish its first satellite shipyard in north coastal Andhra Pradesh to support the growing demand in defence, green energy vessels, commercial shipping, and oil & gas sectors.
Chairman and Managing Director Commodore Hemant Khatri confirmed that HSL has requested approximately 110 acres of land from the state government. Two potential sites—Moolapeta in Srikakulam district and the Kakinada coastline—have been identified, with preliminary site visits already conducted. The project is expected to be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
HSL’s financial growth has been notable, with revenue increasing from ₹403 crore in FY 2020–21 to ₹1,783 crore in FY 2024–25. The shipyard now targets a turnover of ₹3,000 crore within the next two years.
The company is also forging strategic collaborations with global and domestic players, including Lotus Wireless, Vinssen and DSEC (South Korea), Toshiba (Japan) for lithium-titanate (LTO) battery technology, and signed MoUs with Pentagon Rugged Systems and Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML).
Key upcoming projects include the development of electric and hydrogen-powered tugs, a 150-passenger hydrogen ferry, delivery of INS Nipun, and construction of Landing Platform Docks (LPDs), mine countermeasure vessels, Water Jet Fast Attack Crafts (WJFACs), product tankers, and offshore support vessels. These initiatives are aligned with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, focusing on indigenisation and sustainability in maritime defence and commercial shipbuilding.
