Chennai's Water Future: The ₹2,500-Crore Ring Main Project

Metrowater has announced that the ₹2,500-crore ring main project is set to play a vital role in meeting Chennai’s long-term water needs, particularly as demand is expected to rise to 3,253 million litres per day (MLD) by 2057. The project is designed to ensure equitable distribution of water across the city, addressing current limitations in the network.

During the first public consultation, officials explained that the initiative will expand Chennai’s water distribution systems from 48 to 84 zones, enabling more uniform coverage. Akilandeshwari, Superintending Engineer of Metrowater’s Planning and Design Department, stated, “With the current network, equal distribution isn’t possible. If one network fails, the ring main will allow us to reroute water through other systems.”

The project includes 115 km of new transmission lines, with ₹395 crore allocated for road restoration. Metrowater has committed to keeping residents informed about road cuts and traffic diversions through its website and social media channels.

The project has been submitted to the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for funding approval.
