Pune-based SOPAN Group, in collaboration with the VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), has commenced work on India’s first green methanol bunkering and refuelling facility at VOC Port, Tamil Nadu—a key step towards sustainable maritime infrastructure.
The project was formally inaugurated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, aligning with the Maritime India Vision 2030.
The pilot-scale initiative includes the development of a 750 m³ green methanol storage and bunkering terminal, along with associated refuelling systems. SOPAN Group is serving as the EPC contractor, executing the project under India’s broader push for cleaner shipping fuels and green port infrastructure.
Speaking on the occasion, VOCPA Chairperson Susanta Purohit stated:
“The Government of India has set a vision to achieve Net Zero, and VOCPA is actively contributing to this through its Green Port mission.”
Aniruddha Kadvekar, Director at SOPAN Group, highlighted the project's environmental benefits, noting it can enable up to 95% reduction in CO₂ emissions from ships, positioning India as a global leader in green shipping and a sustainable maritime hub.
