Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has received board approval for a 30-year land lease agreement with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK). The decision was finalized during a board meeting held on April 25, 2025, where GRSE sanctioned the lease of a strategically located land parcel at Timber Pond in Howrah.
The site offers valuable waterfront access and will be developed to strengthen GRSE’s shipbuilding, ship repair, and engineering operations. This initiative aligns with the company’s long-term growth strategy to address rising domestic and global demand. However, GRSE noted that no immediate revenue generation is expected from this development.
Headquartered in Kolkata, GRSE is a leading state-owned defence shipyard, specializing in the construction and repair of naval and commercial vessels. It also has a proven track record in international ship exports.
The lease of the Timber Pond site is considered a strategic move to expand GRSE’s infrastructure footprint, positioning it as a future hub for advanced shipbuilding and engineering projects.
