GRSE and Swan Defence Join Hands to Boost India's Commercial Shipbuilding

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Swan Defence and Heavy Industries on April 7, 2025, marking a significant step towards enhancing India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities in the commercial sector. This partnership aligns with the national “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, further strengthening the country’s maritime industry.

The MoU, based on a non-exclusive arrangement, enables both shipyards to collaborate on the construction of commercial vessels and offshore structures. The partnership is designed to serve global markets while advancing India’s maritime interests. By leveraging the combined infrastructure, technical expertise, and design strengths of GRSE and Swan Defence, the collaboration aims to optimize operations, reduce costs, and improve delivery timelines through the development of standardized platform designs and efficient build strategies.

A key focus of the agreement is the joint exploration of commercial shipbuilding opportunities, both in India and abroad. The partnership also seeks to establish a strong and mutually beneficial vendor ecosystem, driving down costs while upholding high-quality standards. In addition to shipbuilding, the collaboration will include cooperation in vessel trials, commissioning, and future maintenance and repairs.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing India’s maritime sector and positioning the country as a global hub for commercial shipbuilding.
