India's Heartbeat: Zero Mile's Ambitious Redevelopment

Nagpur’s historic Zero Mile, the geographical heart of India, is set for a major transformation. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has unveiled a redevelopment project that includes two museums—one underground with modern amenities—and upgraded infrastructure.

Architect Paramjeet Singh Ahuja presented the initial development plan at a Heritage Conservation Committee meeting. The project, funded through Indian Oil Corporation’s corporate social responsibility initiative, will feature an underground museum dedicated to the Great Trigonometrical Survey and Zero Mile’s history. The second museum will highlight Nagpur’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

To enhance visitor experience, the project will introduce a food court, amphitheatre, parking facilities, and an office for the Heritage Conservation Committee. The NMC also plans to reclaim government land near Zero Mile to boost tourism. Since parts of the site currently belong to the Public Works Department (PWD), a land transfer from the district administration to the NMC is required.

The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has issued directives for the site's preservation. District Collector Vipin Itankar has approved the land transfer, and the proposal now awaits state government approval.

Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari has called for a detailed land survey to refine the project report. Officials are set to meet with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to secure final approvals.
