India's Semiconductor Leap: Infineon, Onsemi Join the Race

German semiconductor giant Infineon and US-based Onsemi are exploring partnerships in India to establish semiconductor assembly and test facilities. This move aligns with the growing trend of global firms investing in India’s expanding outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) market.

Infineon recently signed an agreement with Mohali-based CDIL Semiconductors to supply bare semiconductor wafers, which CDIL will process and assemble into power chipsets. Industry sources suggest this partnership could be a step toward setting up an OSAT facility in India. A leader in power semiconductors, Infineon is expected to expand its expertise into the automotive and other sectors through strategic collaborations.

Onsemi, headquartered in Arizona, is a global supplier of power semiconductors and sensors.

Meanwhile, India's Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has approved three major OSAT projects: Tata Group’s ₹27,120 crore facility in Assam, CG Power and Industrial Solutions’ ₹7,584 crore unit, and Kaynes Technology India’s ₹3,307 crore project in Sanand, Gujarat.
