Kerala Bets Big on VISL for Vizhinjam Port's Logistics Future

The Kerala government is evaluating a proposal to grant Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd (VISL) a leading role in the development of port-linked infrastructure around the upcoming Vizhinjam Port.

At a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Dr. A Jayathilak, officials discussed authorising VISL to acquire approximately 100 acres of land near the port to establish container yards, logistics parks, warehouses, and cargo terminals. A senior official from the Ports Department noted, “VISL can initiate planning for supporting infrastructure even before the commencement of gateway traffic,” though emphasized that final government clearance remains essential.

Despite the port nearing operational readiness, progress on critical connectivity projects—notably the Outer Ring Road—has been slow. Officials highlighted the need to treat such infrastructure as an integral part of port logistics, not merely road development.

At its 58th board meeting, VISL reaffirmed its commitment to port-led economic growth and urged swift approval for land acquisition. Meanwhile, the agency is reviewing the draft tender from Konkan Railway Corporation for the 10.7-km Vizhinjam–Balaramapuram rail line, which includes a 9.43-km tunnel, potentially India’s third-longest.

This rail corridor is expected to significantly boost cargo flow from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, and could support a new container terminal between Parassala and Neyyattinkara, strengthening Vizhinjam’s position as a major logistics hub in South India.
