Madurai Infrastructure Push: ₹213 Crore Flyover Enters Final Stretch

Travel between Tamukkam and Sellur is about to get significantly faster with the upcoming inauguration of the 795-metre Sellur arm of Madurai’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose flyover. Designed to bypass the chronically congested Goripalayam junction, the elevated corridor promises a direct route to Sellur that will substantially shave down daily commute times.

Highways Department officials confirm that structural construction on the Sellur stretch is entirely finished, leaving only final work on the approach road. The ramp is slated to open to traffic within the next one to two months. Initiated in 2023, the total cost for the flyover project was recently revised from ₹190.4 crore to ₹213 crore.

This marks the final phase of the high-impact infrastructure project. The flyover's first arm—connecting Tamukkam junction to Nelpettai—opened in February 2026, successfully drastically reducing travel time toward Simmakkal and Nelpettai from 20 minutes to a mere five minutes. The addition of the Sellur arm will complete the double-arm elevated bypass network, delivering comprehensive traffic relief across central Madurai.
