Minister of Ports Proposed International Container Transhipment Port in Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Bids for the first phase of the Galathea Bay project, valued at Rs 44,000 crore, are poised to be solicited by early next year, according to the Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal. During his visit to the prospective site of the International Container Transshipment Port (ICTP) at Galathea Bay.

The comprehensive project report (DPR) for the ICTP endeavor is in the final stages of preparation. Upon securing requisite approvals and consents, tenders will be issued for the construction of the project's inaugural phase. Notably, the project received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change (MoEF&CC) in November 2022.

The Galathea Bay ICTP forms a fundamental component of the holistic development plan for Great Nicobar Island. Positioned strategically, Galathea Bay's location presents favorable conditions for both import and export trade activities due to its proximity (40 nautical miles) to major international shipping routes. Moreover, its projected role in advancing the economic and infrastructural growth of the region is deemed pivotal.

Key factors contributing to its significance include its advantageous geographical location, boasting a natural water depth exceeding 20 meters and possessing the capacity to handle transshipment cargo from various ports, including those in India. These factors are instrumental in establishing Galathea Bay as a key player in global shipping routes and trade networks.
